WATER QUALITY

WATER QUALITY GUIDELINES:

Success with any aquatic system supporting fish depends on good water quality.  Attributes of poor water quality are pH, ammonia, nitrite, dissolved oxygen levels and overly fluctuating water temperatures.

Adequate circulation and filtration have a high impact on the maintenance of consistently good water quality.  Parameters below or above acceptable levels will stress fish in both ponds and retail systems producing a host of possible negative results including: reduced appetite, stunting, toxicity induced immuno-suppression, secondary infections, and even dissolved oxygen depletion.  All of these can result in inferior fish condition and significant mortality.  By applying simple modes of filtration, doing routine maintenance, and conducting periodic water testing, one significantly increases the odds of having a successful fish system.

DESIRED WATER PARAMETERS:

Dissolved Oxygen: 8 ppm @ 70°F
Temperature: 65°F to 80°F
Ammonia: Less than 0.5 ppm
Hardness: 100 - 300 ppm
pH: 7.2 to 8.3
Salinity: 0.1% to 0.25%
Nitrite: Less than 0.25 ppm
